Exploring Nature with Illustration.

Tuesdays, 11 AM-12 PM at Fishburn Park in Roanoke.
n this course, students will learn how to approach nature from an artistic perspective, and art from a scientific perspective through the practice of nature journaling. This practice emphasizes observation of the natural world and uses drawing and illustration to ask questions about what one sees: Why are some leaves pointy and some round? Why do beetles look different from butterflies? Why are crows bigger than sparrows? How do we recognize the visual differences between birds and bugs in the sky? The instructor will lead students in observational exercises and guide them in their exploration of the world around them and the one on their page.
Tuesday, June 3- August 5, 2025. Registration for the full semester includes a nature journal, a set of watercolor paints and colored pencils, and a graphite pencil for each registered artist: $185 per artist. Drop-ins are welcome: $20 per artist.

A Map for Falasteen: Storytime & Map-Making Workshop.
An event with War On Books.
Saturday, June 14, 2025, 11 AM-12:30 PM
Recommended for ages 3-10.
Join War On Books and The Children's Gallery for a special storytime reading of Maysa Odeh and Aliaa Betawi's A Map for Falasteen: A Palestinian Child's Search for Home, followed by a super-fun map-making workshop, led by The Children's Gallery.
About A Map for Falasteen: A young Palestinian girl living in diaspora struggles to find her homeland on a map in this gentle and heartfelt picture book. At school, Falasteen and her classmates are tasked with finding their families' home countries on a map, but no matter how hard she looks, Falasteen can't find Palestine.
Can a place exist if it's not on a map? Confused, Falasteen turns to her family for answers. Her grandfather, grandmother, and Mama encourage her to see their homeland from a different perspective, and each of their stories helps her understand her people's history and her own place in the world.
Filled with beautiful, inspiring illustrations and thoughtful back matter that outlines key terms and historical moments, this is a story of family, resilience and home always being where the heart is.
Registration is required in advance: $20 per artist, or $40 with a book included.
